Heat Treat Aerospace Engine Parts? You Need to Understand AS13100

Posted By: Tom Morrison Community,

The AS13100 standard was released by the AESQ in March, 2021, with the intent of simplifying and harmonizing the Aerospace Engine Manufacturer requirements to its share supply chain. As suppliers work through learning the requirements of the standard and how it applies to them, there are some key points to consider:

  • AS13100 is a supplemental standard to AS9100, so supplier should already be accredited to AS9100 that are performing work in the supply chain.

  • AS13100 is not a certifiable standard, unlike ISO 9001 or AS9100. Compliance will be through self-auditing, annual reporting and customer audits as required today.

  • AS13100 is currently for the Aerospace Engine Manufacturing sector at this time, but Aerospace Industry Association (AIA) is in the process of creating a similar standard of looking to adopt the AS13100 standard.

  • Key areas of focus with this standard are AS9145 (APQP/PPAP), Zero-Defects Approach (usage of an 8D problem solving methodology) and Human Factors considerations within your Quality Management and Corrective Action Systems.

  • Target date for compliance to the standard is December 31, 2022!

So, what do I do now? First, ensure that you have downloaded a copy of the AS13100 standard from SAE.org and review the document. Next, research training that is provided from SAE and some third-party providers.

Currently, SAE provides a 10-hour course online that covers the background, content, and methods for alignment to your current system. That course can be accessed from the following website:  CLICK HERE
